30 years since the death of Milovan Đilas

FLAS Montenegro is preparing a scholarly edition of the most important work by the renowned Yugoslav dissident.

Milovan Đilas and his The New Class

For Montenegrins, Đilas is not only the author of The New Class, but also an outstanding master of literary prose and an ideologue of Montenegrin statehood. However, FLAS’s first “Đilas” project is connected specifically with The New Class, whose significance clearly extends far beyond the Balkans.

Our plans include—alongside an online resource and a new translation of the book, which has become a classic of 20th-century political thought—a collection of scholarly works discussing both the context in which The New Class emerged and its place within Marxist theory, as well as its relevance to contemporary debates on bureaucracy.
